Once there was a shoe seller who was very successful in business. With the confidence of initial success, he wanted to expand his venues. He chose his neighboring town as his next target as it was thickly populated. He sent one of his sales executives and asked him to evaluate the business scope. With high hopes he waited for his sales executive to present his report. After a few days, the sales executive returned, but with a discouraging report.
“Sir, I have toured the whole town. And none of them seems interested in wearing shoes. I see nothing but chappals on their foot. I suggest we choose some other town.”
The shoe seller was not happy with the report. He then sent another sales executive for a second evaluation. The second sales executive also toured the town for few days and returned. But with a different report.
“Sir, I think we have hit the jackpot. You see, there is not a single shoe seller in the town. We can make a fortune in the town as we would be the sole shoe seller with monopoly on the market.”
The shoe seller was happy and sent the sales executive to chart marketing plans. As expected, the new town turned out to be a money churner for the shoe seller.
What have we learnt from the above parable? It’s a big lesson. PERCEPTION IS THE REAL GAME CHANGER. Yes. Both the sales executives saw the same scenario. There was nothing different in WHAT THEY SAW. But what mattered was – HOW THEY SAW IT.
In life, sometimes solutions to big problems can be a simple change in perception.
